The Future of Human Resources: Strategic HR
HALIFAX SPRING WORKSHOP, 2004
A group of over 50 attendees gathered in Halifax on May 5th, 2004 for a very well received Spring Workshop. The session included a talk on "The Future of Human Resources-A Look at Strategic HR" by Jack Duffy, Partner of Duffy Consulting and instructor with Dalhousie University.
The workshop generated lots of discussion and introspection of how organizations are preparing for the future. Mr. Duffy spoke of the "Two Paths" HR tends to take when dealing with HR issues, Compliance Officer or Valued Contributor.
Mr. Duffy went on to speak of the "Two Fatal Omissions" he feels HR makes when dealing with HR issues. Omission one: Body of Knowledge-meaning the theoretical works relating to HR, which has been produced. Omission two: Management Know-How-meaning the basic knowledge HR professionals need to know to gain the respect of others in the organization; i.e.: being familiar with the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles when speaking with the Accounting/Finance department.
Mr. Duffy concluded his presentation by involving the group in a discussion of what issues they felt HR would face in the not so far future. The discussion left the audience with some thought provoking ideas on how to manage these issues, and some creative ways on how to ensure issues become opportunities.
